F1: Damon Hill Wins Third Grand Prix

04/08/96

British Formula One driver Damon Hill (Williams) sped to his third World Championship series Grand Prix victory this weekend at the Argentine Grand Prix. Hill's victory put him and the Williams team well out in front of the series' point standings. With an even 30 points to date, Hill leads the drivers' points cup by 18.

Hill led throughout the race and finished an impressive 12.176 seconds ahead of his nearest competitor, his Williams teammate Jacques Villeneuve. The race gave Williams it's second one-two finish of the season.

Jean Alesi (Benetton), in third; Rubens Barrichello (Jordan), in fourth; Eddie Irvine (Ferrari), fifth; and Jos Verstappen (Footwork) rounded out the top six finishers.

Hill started from the pole, which he narrowly stole from last years world champion, Michael Schumacher (Ferrari). Schumacher had to withdraw from the race with a broken rear wing, when a chunk of debris hit him on lap 46. He was in second place at the time.
