F1: Williams Disavows Responsibility for Senna's Fatal Crash in 1994
04/04/96
United Press International reported that F1 Constructor Williams has taken issue with a report that attributes Ayrton Senna's fatal crash at the 1994 San Marino Grand Prix with steering failure. An official report says that Senna's steering column malfunctioned and only a small part of it remained intact when he lost control of his Williams car and hit the wall at Imola. Williams' technical chief Patrick Head referred to a technical report that said the data on the car indicated that the steering was working correctly at the time of the impact.
In an interview with Autosport magazine, Head said, "I am not I am not saying it is impossible for a Williams car ever to have a component failure, because it is possible for every car up and down the pit lane." He continued, "It is just that in this case we don't believe that what was suggested in the report actually happened, because the data does not tie in with it."
