Toyota's Avalon and Camry Get High Marks for Reliability

04/03/96

The J.D. Power and Associates Engine Quality Report ranked Toyota's Avalon and Camry engines number one for having the least trouble of any engines manufactured in North America. The rankings were made based on a study of consumers who bought or leased a 1995 model-year car or truck and registered it for personal use. The actual trouble rate of the most trouble-free engines is 5.9 problems per 100 vehicles.

Both the Avalon and the Camry are made at the Toyota plant in Georgetown, KY, which won the ranking for producing the most trouble-free engines of any plant included in the study. In addition to North America, the study rated plants in Europe and Asia.

The second highest rating went to engines produced at GM's Saturn plant in Springhill, TN. The Saturn engines saw 7.9 problems per 100 vehicles.

The most trouble-free Asian import was the Nissan Pathfinder engine manufactured in Yokohama, Japan (8.1 problems per 100 vehicles), while Mercedes-Benz engines from Unterturkheim, Germany were the most trouble-free European import (11.5 problems per 100 vehicles). The industry average was 17 problems per 100 vehicles.
