Chrysler President Forgets to Use Landing Gears

03/20/96

Former U.S. Marine pilot and current Chrysler President Robert Lutz landed his $200,000 Czech-made fighter trainer without putting down his landing gear first. Lutz attributed the mishap to a "cockpit distraction," although it could also be called a "pilot error." Lutz was watching another plane instead of paying attention to the one he was trying to land.

Lutz was unhurt although the plane he bought from the Czech government a year ago sustained an undisclosed amount of damage. The accident was not Lutz's first. In 1991 he crashed his helicopter at Ann Arbor Municipal Airport.
