No Progress in GM/UAW Talks

03/14/96

Reuters reported that GM has shut the doors on 21 of it's 29 U.S. auto assembly plants and that 81,000 workers have been laid off until the nation's richest automaker settles a dispute raised by 3,000 striking workers at two GM brake assembly plants in Dayton, Ohio. Wednesday the automaker met with the union to discuss concerns over job security and safety issues, but talks didn't last long and no progress was made.

Today (Thursday) the strike enters it's ninth day, and no new talks are scheduled. The extensive number of lay-offs and assembly line stoppages make this strike the biggest one GM has seen since a general strike in 1970 stopped production for 67 days.
