GM Says Day Old Strike Hasn't Affected Other Plants, Yet

03/08/96

Reuters reported that GM has claimed that the first day of a strike by 3,000 workers at Local 696 had not yet had any impact on their other plants. The nation's biggest automaker refused to comment on whether any impact from the strike would soon be felt, or where. The striking workers put together brakes for most of GM's North-American built vehicles. A four day strike by the same local in 1994 brought production to a standstill at six other GM plants.

The strike was called after GM failed to resolve a dispute that arose because of the company's plans to shift production of brake components to outside suppliers, thus taking jobs away from GM employees.
