UAW Strikes at GM Brake Plants

03/06/96

The Associated Press reported that 3,000 workers at two GM brake plants in Dayton, OH (UAW local 696) went on strike Tuesday morning. The workers walked off the production line at 10:00 a.m. because they were unhappy with the lack of progress in their attempt to settle a dispute with GM.

The issue involves the automaker's plans to have brake parts produced at non-GM facilities and out of the country. The production of the parts elsewhere would result in job losses at the brake plants. Last week the local Dayton chapter chose to postpone a strike that had been scheduled, as the workers thought the issue could be resolved withou having to strike.

The two striking plants produce brakes for the majority of GM's vehicles. The strike is expected to bring production at other GM plants to a standstill.
