Gordon Wins Pontiac Excitement 400
03/04/96
Reuters reported that NASCAR driver Jeff Gordon's luck improved drastically over the weekend. Gordon, who dropped out of the Daytona 500 after a crash on lap 9 and had to quit last week's Goodwrench Service 400 because of mechanical problems, won the Pontiac Excitement 400, third race of 1996's Winston Cup Series.
Gordon drives a Chevrolet Monte Carlo and won last year's Winston Cup Champion. His win at the Richmond International Raceway is his 10th win in five years of Winston Cup racing. Dale Jarret crossed the finish line second, and was followed by the three Roush Racing teammates, Ted Musgrave, Jeff Burton, and Mark Martin.
True to its name, the Pontiac Excitement 400 generated excitement that outlasted the race. After all was said and done, John Andretti used his Ford Thunderbird to ram the back end of Bobby Hamilton's Pontiac Grand Prix in apparent retaliation for an incident on the track where Hamilton bumped into him.
