Arie Luyendyk: Unofficial Track Record at Phoenix International Raceway

02/29/96

The Indy Racing League announced that Arie Luyendyk has unofficially broken Phoenix International Raceway's track record. The previous record was set by Bryan Herta last April. Herta clocked a lap of 181.952 mph. Luyendyk's time on Tuesday was an impressive 182.463 mph. Two other IRL drivers broke the 180 mph mark in practice: Richie Hearn clocked 181.178 and Tony Stewart clocked 180.180.

Luyendyk, who won the Indy 500 in 1990, responded to the news of his time by predicting even faster speeds to come. "I think we can get more out of it," he said.
