NASCAR P.R. Feature: Injured Ice Hockey Player to be Honorary Crew Member
Travis Roy, paralyzed by a neck injury while playing in his first hockey game for the Boston University team last fall, will serve as an honorary crew member on Ricky Craven's #2 DuPont Krytox NASCAR Busch Series, Grand National Division team. A decal bearing Roy's name and the number 24, his ice hockey jersey number, will be prominently displayed on both the # 41 NASCAR Winston Cup Series car and the # 2 NASCAR Busch Series Chevrolet, both driven by Craven throughout 1996. "I've known Travis and his family for many years," said Craven. "Travis worked on my race team in 1987, 1988 and 1989 when his dad was my crew chief. They are wonderful people and Travis is a very special friend to me. He has followed my racing career ever since he was a young boy, and I wanted to do something special for him." Craven continued, "we're going all-out to try to get Travis to some of the races this year, if we can. If his health improves enough that the doctors will allow him to come, we'll do our best to make sure he gets to few of the races. He's one of my biggest fans, and we want to support and encourage him as much as possible." Roy was recently moved from a rehabilitation hospital in Boston, Mass. to a special facility for spinal-cord patients in Atlanta, Ga., and Craven plans to visit him during the Purolator 500 racing weekend at Atlanta in a few weeks. Roy now has a special head-set telephone which he can use and he has been communicating with Craven almost on a weekly basis.
