02/19/96
NASCAR public relations reported that injured Boston University Hockey player Travis Roy will be an honorary member of the crew for Ricky Craven's Dupont Krytox NASCAR Busch Series, Grand National Division team. Craven's No. 2 car will prominently display a decal bearing Roy's name and the number 24, which is the number Roy wore on his hockey jersey. Craven's No. 41 car in the NASCAR Winston Cup Series will also sport the decal.
Roy sustained a neck injury while playing hockey for Boston University last year. He remains paralyzed as a result of the injury. Roy worked on Craven's race team from 1987 through 1989 when his father was Craven's crew chief. Craven said he was hopeful that Roy's rehabilitation would procede to the point where his doctors would allow him to attend some of the races this year.
Roy was moved recently from a rehabilitation hospital in Boston to a special facility for treatment of spinal cord injuries in Atlanta. Craven will visit him at the facility in a couple of weeks, when he when he will be in Atlanta for the Purolator 500 racing weekend.
