Jacques Villeneuve Out For Blood 02/14/96 Reuters reported that Canadian Formula One driver Jacques Villeneuve has announced that he will try his best to beat everyone he competes against, including his own teammate. Villeneuve spoke at the presentation of the brand new Williams-Renault FW18. Villeneuve was last year's IndyCar champion and has just joined the Williams team. The teammate to whom he will give no quarter is Damon Hill, runner-up in last year's Formula One Championship. Last year Hill was beat out by German driver Michael Schumacher. This year he is favored to win. Both Hill and Villeneuve are currently in Estoril, Portugal, where Hill has been testing the new Williams Renault FW18. Paul Dever -- The Auto Channel ##--##--##news00150 Winning Busch Clash Crew Chief is Happy 02/14/96 Reuters reported that Todd Parrot, crew chief for the winning driver at last weekend's Busch Clash is pretty happy about the success of the venture. The Robert Yates Team won the Clash in car No. 88 with Dale Jarrett behind the wheel. This season marks the first time Yates has run two full time cars, and the Clash was the No. 88 Ford's first race. It was Parrott's first win as a crew chief. Todd Parrott is the son of Buddy Parrott who has long been a successful crew chief for NASCAR top stock cars. Todd remarked that his father had just recently told him that his first win as a crew chief was also with a No. 88 car in Daytona. The senior Parrott's win with No. 88 was in 1978 for DiGard Racing; Darrell Waltrip drove, and Robert Yates was part of the team. Todd's only other trip down Victory Lane was in 1984 when he worked as a crewman for Richard Petty. It was Richard Petty's 200th win, Todd's dad was crew chief and Robert Yates had built the engine in Petty's Pontiac. Todd has been a NASCAR crewman for 17 years. Dale Jarrett, winning driver of the No. 88 car praised Todd Parrott and his managing skills. Todd became crew chief when Ernie Irvan returned to driving for Yates after a near-fatal crash in Yates Racing's no. 28 car. After Irvan's crash, Jarrett had been driving No. 28 as Irvan's replacement. Irvan came back from the crash in No. 88 driving it three times last fall. This season Irvan took the No. 28 car back over, and Jarrett moved to No. 88, when Yates decided to run both cars. Not only are the driver, car and crew chief new, but almost the whole crew is new too. Parrott is predicting good things for Dale Jarrett, the No. 28 car and the rest of the crew. He thinks they will be fighting to win the Daytona 500, and he may well be right. In qualifications last week Jarrett's teammate Ernie Irvan locked down the second starting position nudging out Jarrett by .036 seconds. Paul Dever -- The Auto Channel ##--##--##news00154 Pre-Season Favorite Slides Off Track 02/14/96 Atlas Team F1 has reported that Formula One pre-season favorite Damon Hill drove the Williams team's Renault FW18 off the track yesterday in Estoril, one day after the new car was presented. The car's brakes failed on a curve, causing Hill to slide off a rain soaked track into the gravel. Hill was not hurt. He ended his test session after 30 laps, clocking a fastest time of 1:36.53. All of the test sessions at Estoril were suspended because of the rain. -- CALL FOR ENTRIES --

This posting officially announces the fifth annual F1PP competition.
The goal of F1PP is to correctly pick the top drivers and teams for the
1996 season, but unlike the F1 Pick6 competition, you make one set of
picks for the entire season to predict the top teams and drivers for
the year.

The picks are collated before the first race, and my magical set of perl
scripts recalculates the standings after each race. As a result, no
entries can be accepted after the start of practice for the first race
of the 1996 season. While it may seem advantageous to delay your entry
as long as possible, this leaves you at the mercy of Internet links and
other potential failures, which may prevent your entry from reaching us
in time. Don't delay too long!

To enter, fill in the web entry form at http://www.motorsport.com/F1PP.

If you do not have access to the web, or to a forms-capable web
browser, send an email message to f1pp@motorsport.com , with your
predictions for the top 10 of the Drivers' Championship (including the
number of wins for each driver), and the top 6 of the Constructors'
Championship. Please format the entry as follows (note spaces after
the position codes, and the colon separating the number of wins from
the driver's name). Picks with fewer or more than 10 drivers, or with
the total number of wins not equal to 16, or with fewer or more than 6
constructors, WILL BE DISCARDED.

        C3. Ligier
        C4. Williams
        C5. Jordan
        C6. Minardi

We will provide WWW access to the scoring reports; check the MNI web
site for updates, scoring reports and standings. Scoring summaries will
be also posted to rec.autos.sport.info after each race.

Points are scored according to a somewhat complex formula: basically,
for each right-on pick you score 200-140-100-80-60-50-40-30-20-10 for
drivers and 200-120-80-60-40-20 for constructors, with each "off" score
being the right-on score divided by (1 + 1.5 * (# positions off)). Each
correctly predicted victory scores 25 points, down from last year's 30.
Intermediate standings (posted after every race) will have the Drivers'
and Constructors' points pro-rated for the number of races completed so
far.

If you're really keen on determining the exact scoring procedure, take a
look at the perl code (available on the web site) used to calculate the
driver and constructor points.

[Note: no points scored by substitute drivers (such as Magnussen for
Hakkinen, or Mansell for Blundell in 1995), will be added to your
primary driver's score for F1PP scoring.]

382 players took part in the 1994 competition, up strongly from the 146
in 1994, 71 in 1993 and 35 in 1992. Tim Bailer claimed the top honours
with 1560.2 points, followed by Thorwald Herbert and Dave Reed.
