Toyota to Put Imported Engines in Domestic Japanese Cars

02/09/96

NikkeiNet reported that Toyota Motor Corporation will start putting Indonesian engines in cars they sell commercially in Japan. They hope to lower costs by using internationally produced parts. The move will mark the first time a Japanese carmaker will use an Asian built import engine in their domestic market. The engines will come from one of Toyota's joint ventures in Indonesia, PT Toyota-Astra Motor. PT Toyota-Astra Motor currently builds 5,000 engines a month for a locally produced Kijang sport utility vehicle.
