Toyota Ready for Joint Ventures in China

02/07/96

NikkeiNet reported that one of the things on Deputy Chinese Prime Minister Li Lanquing's dance card when he visits Tokyo this month will be talks with Toyota. Toyota President Hiroshi Okuda will reciprocate by visiting China in early March. Okuda will seek the Chinese Government's final approval for Toyota's joint venture in China.

Toyota and the Chinese carmaker Tianjin Automotive Industry Corp. hope to manufacture 1,300-1,800cc engines for Charade passenger cars by the end of this year. The Charades are being assembled by Tianjin Automotive. Toyota has also agreed to establish four or five joint ventures with a Tianjin-affiliated auto parts maker. These other ventures will produce steering wheels and other car parts.
