Japanese and U.S. Carmakers to Cooperate in Establishing Study Group

02/07/96

NikkeiNet reported that U.S. and Japanese car manufacturers will collaborate to establish a working group that will study environmental and safety technologies. The basic agreement was reached at a meeting in Japan in January, but will not be formally announced until the Japan Automobile Manufacturers Association and the American Automobile Manufacturers Association meet in Washington D.C. later this month.

The collaboration is expected to improve relations between the U.S. and Japanese automobile industries. The two auto manufacturers associations discussed forming working groups when former President Bush visited Japan in 1992. Following intense negotiations between the U.S. and Japanese Governments, however, the relationship between the auto industries soured.
