IRL Announces Awards for Indy 200

The Indy Racing League officially announced prize payouts for the Indy 200 at Walt Disney World, this week. Indy 200 winner Buzz Calkins took the biggest prize, of course, netting $122,500. Second place driver Tony Stewart took home $85,250 and third place driver Robbie Buhl took home $87,250. The discrepancy between the size of Stewart's and Buhl's purses is explained by prizes given above and beyond the awards given for placing in the race.

The Indy 200 at Walt Disney World was the first of five IRL races scheduled for 1996. Total purse payout for the race was $1,078,500. Purse payoput for the Phoenix 200 will also exceed a million dollars, and the payout for the Indy 500 is expected to exceed $8 million. The total 1996 IRL series purse payout is expected to exceed $12 million.
