02/02/96

The Indy Racing Leagues predicts that speeds in March's Phoenix 200 will be fast. The prediction came in an IRL Press Release and is based on "comparisons of speeds throughout the field -- from Phoenix last year to Disney this year."

At the Indy 200 at Walt Disney World, Buddy Lazier qualified for the pole starting position with a speed of 181.388 MPH. The fastest lap during the race was run by Indy 200 Winner Buzz Calkins who clocked in at 171.805 on lap 188.

Last year's Phoenix race had a pole speed of 181.952 and a fastest lap of 169.492. In testing this year for the Phoenix race, Lazier has clocked an unnofficial Phoenix International Raceway record at 184.900 MPH.
