IRL Predicts Fast Speeds for 1996 Phoenix 200 02/02/96 The Indy Racing Leagues predicts that speeds in March's Phoenix 200 will be fast. The prediction came in an IRL Press Release and is based on "comparisons of speeds throughout the field -- from Phoenix last year to Disney this year." At the Indy 200 at Walt Disney World, Buddy Lazier qualified for the pole starting position with a speed of 181.388 MPH. The fastest lap during the race was run by Indy 200 Winner Buzz Calkins who clocked in at 171.805 on lap 188. Last year's Phoenix race had a pole speed of 181.952 and a fastest lap of 169.492. In testing this year for the Phoenix race, Lazier has clocked an unnofficial Phoenix International Raceway record at 184.900 MPH. news00079.htmlCheck out the whole story! Paul Dever -- The Auto Channel ##--##--##news00078 Official Press Release of the Indy Racing League: DISNEY SPEEDS PREDICT FAST PACE AT PHOENIX INDIANAPOLIS, Feb. 1, 1996 -- Racing lap speeds in excess of 170 miles per hour and qualifying speeds of more than 180 mph last Saturday at the Indy 200 at Walt Disney World predict a fast pace for the Phoenix 200 live on ABC Sports television March 24, the next Indy Racing League event. "Cars qualify at one speed, and race at another," commented Jack Long, IRL executive director. "What we learn by comparing speeds on the one-mile ovals at Disney and Phoenix is that fans in Phoenix could quite possibly see record speeds at the IRL event in March." At Disney, the first-year IRL's inaugural event, Buddy Lazier won the pole starting position by qualifying at 181.388 miles per hour on the Walt Disney World Speedway, which measures exactly one mile (5,280 feet) around the race track at a point 10 feet above the white line (inside boundary). During the race, quick laps consistently registered in the 168-171 mph range. Buzz Calkins, the Indy 200 winner, clocked the fastest leading lap of the event at 171.805 mph on Lap 188 of the 200-lap race. He had five laps of 170-mph-plus. At the 200-lap Indy race in Phoenix (that track also measures exactly a mile) last April, the pole speed was 181.952 mph and the fastest lap of the race was 169.492 mph. "The comparisons of speeds throughout the field -- from Phoenix last year to Disney this year -- are very interesting," Long said. At Disney, 17 of the 20 starters clocked race laps faster than 160 mph and eight of the 17 were faster than 165. At Phoenix in 1995, 22 of 27 starters saw 160 mph in the race and 10 eclipsed 165. In testing this year at Phoenix, Lazier clocked an all-time unofficial record PIR lap of 19.47 seconds, 184.900 mph. # # # TICKETS FOR THE Phoenix 200 Indy Racing League event at Phoenix International Raceway March 22-23-24 are available by calling the PIR ticket office at 602/252-2227. Phoenix 200 media inquiries and credentials will be handled by PIR public relations director Craig Fischer at 602/252-3833 (Fax 602/254-4622). ##--##--##news00079 IRL Announces Awards for Indy 200 02/02/96 The Indy Racing League officially announced prize payouts for the Indy 200 at Walt Disney World, this week. Indy 200 winner Buzz Calkins took the biggest prize, of course, netting $122,500. Second place driver Tony Stewart took home $85,250 and third place driver Robbie Buhl took home $87,250. The discrepancy between the size of Stewart's and Buhl's purses is explained by prizes given above and beyond the awards given for placing in the race. The Indy 200 at Walt Disney World was the first of five IRL races scheduled for 1996. Total purse payout for the race was $1,078,500. Purse payoput for the Phoenix 200 will also exceed a million dollars, and the payout for the Indy 500 is expected to exceed $8 million. The total 1996 IRL series purse payout is expected to exceed $12 million. news00081.htmlCheck out the whole story. news00082.htmlCheck out a table of the all the winners' winnings. news00084.htmlCheck out a list of other official stats from the Indy 200. Paul Dever -- The Auto Channel ##--##--##news00080 $1,078,500 PAID TO DISNEY FIELD; CALKINS NETS $122,500 INDIANAPOLIS, Feb. 1, 1996 -- Winner Buzz Calkins netted $122,500 of the total prize fund of $1,078,500 for the Indy Racing League's inaugural event last Saturday, the Indy 200 at Walt Disney World Presented by Aurora at the new one-mile Walt Disney World Speedway. The prize payout was announced today by Jack Long, executive director of the Indy Racing League headquartered at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway, home of the Indianapolis 500. The Indy 200 at Walt Disney World is the first of five IRL races scheduled for 1996 that is expected to have a series purse payout exceeding $12 million. The next stop on the IRL schedule is the Phoenix 200 March 24, which will also pay more than $1 million in prize money. Then comes the 80th running of the Indianapolis 500 May 26, with an expected payout of more than $8 million as auto racing's richest event. Other million-dollar IRL events in 1996 will be the True Value 200 at New Hampshire International Speedway Aug. 18 and the Las Vegas 500K at the new Las Vegas Motor Speedway Sept. 15. Calkins, 24, of Denver, Colo., won the $78,000 IRL first place prize and received the $22,000 IRL qualifying bonus that goes to each of the top 20 qualifiers in each IRL event. In addition to that $100,000 total, $25,000 of the $78,500 total designated (accessory) prize fund went to the winner. His top designated awards included $10,000 from Raybestos as the highest finishing rookie; $3,000 from Delco Battery, and $2,500 from Earl's Performance Products. "This prize money will contribute to the team in a meaningful way," Calkins said. "That's an intriguing thing about the IRL purse structure. The prize money is at a level where it will actually help a team's budget. Most racing isn't that way." Tony Stewart, 24, of Rushville, Ind., was runner up and won $85,250 -- $60,000 for second place, $22,000 in IRL qualifying bonus, and $3,250 in designated prize money. Third place finisher Robbie Buhl actually earned more than Stewart at $87,250. Buhl, 32, of Grosse Pointe, Mich., won $47,000 for third, the $22,000 top-20 IRL qualifying bonus, and $18,250 in designated prizes highlighted by $8,000 from Valvoline, Inc., $5,000 from Miller Electric Manufacturing (lowest qualifier to lead race), and $2,500 from Delco Battery. Fourth place finisher Michele Alboreto won $65,000, and Indy 500 veteran Roberto Guerrero was fifth with $59,500. Polesitter Buddy Lazier, who finished 17th, won $46,000 which included the $10,000 Pole Winner Chief Mechanic Award from True Value. David Kudrave, in 20th and last place, won $33,000. Money for positions 21-24 -- $10,000 for each position -- was split among five entered drivers and teams who did not make the race. ##--##--##news00081 Table of Indy 200 Winnings 02/02/96 The following table was published as a press release from the Indy Racing League.
