rec.autos.antique 01/29/96 This newsgroup gets the award for inventing this week's most interesting (albeit unpronounceable) acronym: LOLFPWODTCOS stands for that "little old lady from pasadena who only drove to church on Sundays." Interesting discussions include a thread about whether or not to rebuild an engine in a low-mileage 1965 Olds 98 (it runs fine but you want to keep it as a classic . . .). A couple of impromptu surveys have kicked of threads about the most unique, unusual, or different car you've owned and how often you drive your antique car. All the usual discussion about favorites and cars for sale are included, plus the question of what one has to do to get a 1963 Chrysler to run on today's gas without damaging the engine. Recent flooding has brought with it an interesting thread about driving Chrysler Intrepids through standing water: should the placements of air intakes low on an engine can be considered a design flaw? One Intrepid owner's experience left his car ruined after water got sucked into the engine through an air intake. Current discussion also includes a comparison of Chrysler, Ford, and BMW cup holders, a comparison of the Honda Accord vs. the Chrysler LH, a raging argument about the reliability of Chrysler minivans, and an impromptu survey about Dodge Avenger/Plymouth Sebring that focuses on head room for tall drivers. Currently this group will give you tips on replacing a headliner in a 1968 Bug, finding a good VW mechanic in Philadelphia, and how to open your doors when your locks freeze in St. Louis, and the best way to replace sparkplugs. Got a question about an old Bug, Ghia, or VW Bus--ask the group. The Japan Automobile Manufacturers Association announced that if the five year trend continues, 1996 production is liable to sink below 10 million units. 1995 production clocked in at 10.19 million vehicles. Japanese automotive production has decreased almost 25% since 1990. Domestic automobile sales rose in Japan last year; more imports and fewer exports accounted for the total decrease in production. Statistics on sales by car types reveal that passenger car production is down 1.1% (the first decline in 11 years), and that subcompact production fell 6.2%. Mini-car production rose 13.6% to hit a second consecutive annual record. Truck production fell 6.1% to 2.53 million units. Paul Dever -- The Auto Channel ##--##--##news00058
