Pennzoil Leads The Way
Already Meets 1997 Proposed Standard
New Standard will Replace ILSAC GF-1 Standard
HOUSTON, January 18, 1996 -- Pennzoil Products Company Group Vice President
Products Marketing, Clyde W. Beahm, has announced that Pennzoil's motor oils
already meet all the new GF-2 protection standard which have been established for
the next generation of motor oils, even though the standard does not go into
effect until 1997.
"The GF-2 standard will replace the current ILSAC GF-1 standard with levels of protection that will meet the demands of higher performance, higher output engines that will debut during the remainder of this decade," Beahm said. "We're proud to point out that our motor oil already meets this tougher standard."
The American Automobile Manufacturers Association of the United States and the Japan Automobile Manufacturers Association, Inc., through an organization called the International Lubricant Standardization and Approval Committee (ILSAC), jointly developed and approved an ILSAC GF-2 minimum performance standard for gasoline-fueled passenger engine oils.
Beahm said Pennzoil's new oil is available in 5W-30 and 10W-30, the grades specifically recommended for American and Japanese cars, light trucks, vans and sport utility vehicles. He also pointed out that the big three automakers, Chrysler, Ford and GM will recommend GF-2 rated motor oil for their vehicles.
Some of the improvements expected as a result of the proposed upgrade from ILSAC GF-1 to ILSAC GF-2 include:
- Improved cold-engine start up to prevent oil gelation
- Better protection at high RPM by preventing foaming
- Reduced engine deposits caused by high temperatures
- Reduced oil consumption related to volatility of the oil
- Better protection for the catalytic converters
- Improved fuel efficiency which helps save natural resources
Beahm said no other major motor oil marketer has claimed their motor oils fully meet the tough GF-2 standard. "Some of the toughest requirements in the proposed standard have to do with protecting the emissions system," he explained. "Because of increasing emissions system testing regulations and the expense of repairing damaged emission systems, protections of catalytic converters in now more important. Providing this level of protection requires more carefully controlled additive chemistry and more highly refined oils. Some of the technologies used to achieve these objectives have very limited availability, and that's why Pennzoil is an exception in meeting these requirements."
Pennzoil Products Company is a wholly subsidiary of Houston based Pennzoil Company. Pennzoil motor oil has been America's top-selling motor oil for ten years running.
