The Cross Sport version of the Atlas is for the families or groups that prefer fewer seats (5 rather than 7) and more cargo space. Couple that with good power and handling, toss in AWD, an impressive array of safety features, clean and functional interior design, and sticker prices that are actually reasonable, and it looks like VW has got another winner.

Powered by a 2.0-liter turbocharged 4 that puts out 235 horsepower and 258 lb.-ft. of torque, that powerplant connects to an 8-speed automatic transmission. Fuel economy is middle of the road, in the mid 20's when driven smartly. Even fully loaded with adults there was no lack of power when needed. The handling is nice and flat in the curves with feather light steering, and speaking of feathers, the braking system allows for super gradual stops that barely ripple beverages in the cupholders.

You will not feel cramped in the front seats with these copious numbers:
Front Head Room: 39.4 inches
Front Leg Room: 41.6 inches
Front Shoulder Room: 61.5 inches

The second row seats are also generous :
Second Row Head Room:37.8 inches
Second Row Leg Room: 40.4 inches
Second Row Shoulder Room: 60.6 inches

And rear seaters have their own USB ports (2) and climate vents.

With all seats up there is a healthy 40.3 cubic feet for groceries, soccer balls, or luggage.

Put that second row down and you've got an impressive 77.8 cubic feet for sporting equipment, lumber, or your monthly Costco stock up.

Or toss a couple sleeping bags down and enjoy a meteor show via the immense moonroof.

Finally, the Atlas infotainment system is simple and easy and voice recognition takes care of potential distracted moments. And for those solo drives you'll appreciate the quiet, as well as the chance to finally be able to listen to your music. It may be moot to call this a great family car, but for medium sized families, it sure could be. Be sure to include it on your test drive list.
