WASHINGTON—The Atlantic hurricane season runs from June 1, through November 30. GEICO wants to help you prepare for this season by offering the following safety reminders.

Determine your risk – While the brunt of a hurricane’s force often strikes coastal areas, its effects can reach hundreds of miles inland. National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration’s Interactive flood information Map can help identify the different flood risks in your community and help determine how best to protect your property.

Create an evacuation plan – Identify a safe place. It doesn’t have to be hours away as long as it’s out of the danger zone. Discuss how you will communicate should you be separated from your family and plan to get in touch with relatives. The Insurance Information Institute (I.I.I.) provides a “Know Your Plan” app, to map out the best route to reach your safe location in your area.

Create a home inventory – Make a detailed home inventory and photograph of all your possessions. This will help to substantiate any losses and speed up claims process if needed. I.I.I. features a “Know Your Stuff” mobile app that is free and easy-to-use.

Review insurance coverage – Make sure your homeowners or renters insurance coverage is up-to-date. Have proper coverage for your belongings and confirm flood damage is included in your policy.

Build a disaster kit – A good disaster kit includes a three-day supply of food and water, cash (power outages), blankets, medications, toiletries, batteries and a radio.
