Nevada and Arizona Vanpooling Programs Honored By Association for Commuter Transportation

ST. LOUIS, Sept. 1, 2016 -- vRide, which provides resourceful, efficient and sustainable transportation solutions, today announced that two of its vanpooling partners have earned national recognition from the Association for Commuter Transportation (ACT). ACT is an international trade association and leading advocate for commuter transportation and transportation demand management.

The Regional Transportation Commission of Washoe County (RTC Washoe) was honored with ACT's Commute Options Vanpool Award for its collaborative work on the RTC VANPOOL program in Nevada. Participants in the RTC VANPOOL program split the cost of leasing a van, and trips are subsidized by RTC Washoe. The program has experienced significant growth since the launch of its partnership with vRide, with 95 vanpools currently in operation, including 15 to the Tahoe Reno Industrial Center in Storey County.

"Vanpools are ideal for commuters – not only are they easy and convenient, but they also save money as well as help reduce traffic congestion and carbon emissions," said Carol Perry, RTC Washoe trip reduction specialist and manager of the RTC VANPOOL program. "Leveraging vRide's nearly 40 years of vanpooling experience made developing and maintaining the RTC VANPOOL program simple and efficient."

In addition, the Valley Metro vanpooling program in Arizona was a finalist for an ACT award. The program provides federally-funded vans to qualifying groups of seven to 15 commuters. One of the vanpool members drives, while passengers share the monthly costs of gas, insurance and vehicle maintenance. Nearly 3,000 Valley residents commute daily via Valley Metro's vanpool program, in partnership with vRide, with an average commute distance of 75 miles round trip.

Reduces Cost of Tolls, Gas, Vehicle Maintenance and Depreciation

Vanpooling provides flexible commuting options for those with limited transportation access and offers benefits to consumers and businesses alike. For an average commute of 50 miles per day, vanpooling can save individuals up to $10,000 per year by reducing the cost of tolls, gas, vehicle maintenance and depreciation. Businesses that offer vanpool programs as an added benefit for employees not only gain a competitive differentiator for recruiting, but also a way to improve their corporate sustainability profile.

Enterprise Holdings, the world's largest car rental company, acquired vRide in June 2016. In the U.S. alone, the Enterprise Holdings fleet exceeds 1.1 million vehicles and its integrated network – with more than 6,200 fully staffed neighborhood and airport branch offices – is located within 15 miles of 90 percent of the U.S. population.

In addition to vanpooling, Enterprise Holdings operates Enterprise Rent-A-Car, National Car Rental and Alamo Rent A Car as well as offers car sharing, ride-matching, truck rental and car sales services through its flagship Enterprise brand. Last year, Enterprise Rideshare launched a partnership with the Community Transportation Association of America to provide organizations with the resources to start up or expand vanpool programs of any size.

"In Arizona, Valley Metro vanpool riders save more than 55 million miles and over two million gallons of fuel each year. And approximately 600 people are now commuting using RTC VANPOOL in Nevada, with the budget increasing nearly fivefold since the program was launched in 2005," said Enterprise Holdings Vice President Ryan Johnson, who oversees vRide as well as other commuter solutions, including Enterprise Rideshare and the company's online ride-matching service, Zimride by Enterprise.

"Such success is a direct result of comprehensive transportation planning and collaboration at all levels –nationally, regionally and locally," Johnson noted. "We are extremely proud of our vRide partners, who set an example every day by making vanpooling one of the most strategic, cost-effective and sustainable transportation options out there."
