DC Mayor Joins Hoffman-Madison Waterfront For Inaugural Lighting Of The Francis Case Memorial Bridge

WASHINGTON, Aug. 18, 2016 -- Hoffman-Madison Waterfront (HMW), developer of The Wharf neighborhood on D.C.'s Southwest waterfront, today announced the lighting of Washington D.C.'s Francis Case Memorial Bridge (Case Bridge). This grand work of public art was designed by Citelum, the lighting architects of the Eiffel Tower, the Oriental Pearl Tower in Shanghai, and the London Bridge for the London Olympics.

The lighting of the Case Bridge celebrates the connection between the mile-long, $2B Wharf development to East Potomac Park, as it turns the busy bridge into a beautiful landmark.

To celebrate the event, HMW will host Mayor Muriel Bowser to switch on the lights for the first official lighting. The vibrant installation will artistically illuminate the waterfront neighborhood at The Wharf every night hereafter.

"This work of public art not only signals the importance of the Case Bridge as a gateway to the District, but also the progress we continue to make on our waterfront," said Mayor Bowser. "I am honored to be part of this exciting moment at The Wharf and look forward to celebrating future milestones that remind us of the 6,000 jobs and economic opportunities coming to the Southwest neighborhood. Ultimately, this transformative project will help create pathways to the middle class for District residents."

The Case Bridge is one of the busiest and most important arteries of the Nation's Capital, carrying more than 170,000 cars daily on Interstate 395 over the Potomac River, where the first DC exit is onto Maine Avenue SW and the very northern end of The Wharf. Sponsored by HMW, SWBID and the D.C. Department of Transportation, along with the support of the U.S. Commission of Fine Arts, the artwork on the south side of the Case Bridge will incorporate blue and white lights that reflect over the water.

The lighting by Citelum, will gently illuminate the bridge and its supporting piers, while creating an enhanced visual experience for Southwest Waterfront visitors. The illuminated bridge will also provide the reimagined waterfront neighborhood with a beautiful glow every evening.

The Case Bridge lighting is the very first part of Hoffman-Madison Waterfront's vision of enhancing the Southwest waterfront area while staying true to what makes The Wharf neighborhood unique. "This lighting is an expression of The District's new world class waterfront – The Wharf. This iconic artwork is part of a holistic campaign celebrating our connections to East Potomac Park and Virginia. We're also building a water taxi system, Banneker steps, Southwest shuttle services, piers, bike trails, bike-share services, and other connections to bring people together," said Monty Hoffman, Founder and CEO of PN Hoffman.

The Wharf:
The Wharf is a $2 billion, world-class, mixed-use waterfront development located on the historic Washington Channel. Situated along the District of Columbia's Southwest Waterfront, The Wharf is adjacent to the National Mall with a development area that stretches across 24 acres of land and 50 acres of water from the Municipal Fish Market to Fort McNair. When complete, it will feature more than three million square feet of new residential, office, hotel, retail, cultural, marina, and public uses including waterfront parks, promenades, piers, and docks.

The Wharf is a large-scale waterfront development by Hoffman-Madison Waterfront.
