Stellar driving nearly puts Pro Stock ace Shane Gray in Seattle semifinals

SEATTLE (Aug. 7) -- Valvoline/Nova Services ace Shane Gray flashed his driving skills
over two rounds of the 29th annual Protect The Harvest.com NHRA Northwest Nationals
presented by Lucas Oil on Sunday at Pacific Raceways.
His combined reaction time for both rounds was .033-second, with a .028-second reaction
time in the first round and a .005 light in Round 2.
Gray's driving helped him beat Gray Motorsports engine customer Drew Skillman in
the first round, and it nearly sent No. 1 qualifier Vincent Nobile home in the
second round.
Gray's race with Skillman was a battle of the Nos. 8 and 9 qualifiers, with Skillman
getting off the line first with a .019 light. But Gray made the better run, 6.568
seconds at 210.60 mph, to run past Skillman's 6.625-second pass at 210.01 mph.
"It's never good to have to race your teammate, but that's how it goes sometimes,"
Gray said. "We need to qualify a little further up so we don't have to do that again.
That was a decent run, and we were fortunate to get around Drew. He's a great driver."
Nobile had earned his first No. 1 qualifier of the season, and he was low of the
second round with a pass of 6.542 seconds at 211.23 mph. Still, Gray's .005 light
(to Nobile's .015) and pass of 6.554 seconds at 209.95 mph was nearly enough to
advance to the semifinals. Nobile's margin of victory was a scant .0025-second.
"I have a lot of respect for Vincent, for sure," Gray said. "That was a great race.
I thought I was ahead of him, and I glanced over as much as I could at top end,
but I couldn't see him. Next thing you know, his win light comes on."
Gray maintained seventh place in the Pro Stock standings, moving closer to sixth-place
Skillman and pulling away from eighth-place Chris McGaha.
"My guys will keep working hard and chipping away at it," Gray said. "We'll go to
Brainerd (Minn.) and hope to go a few more rounds. It's the time of the year to
be running good."

effort at the 29th annual Protect The Harvest.com NHRA Northwest Nationals on Sunday
