The former oilman seemed unaffected by the soaring temperatures at Summit Motorsports Park and qualified an impressive fifth on Sunday's grid, with Gray's 6.603 at 209.43 mph proving he can run for the trophy. "The guys did a great job of adapting to the conditions we're facing out here," Gray said. "It's hard to get these cars to tip-toe down the track, but that's what you have to do sometimes when the surface temperatures get up there. It's been a beautiful weekend with lots of sunshine, but while that's good for the fans, it's hell on the crew chiefs. I'm proud of the way ours has responded." The Valvoline/Nova Services race team, now led solely by former Top Fuel and Pro Stock driver Dave Connolly of nearby Elyria, Ohio, has been on an upward trend since Connolly joined the group a few months ago. Like most things in Pro Stock, patience is key to making any real progress. "I believe we've gone rounds at every race but one since Dave has been with us," Gray said. "It takes time to make gains and you have to be very methodical in your approach, but Dave has been racing for a long time in all kinds of different race cars, so he's got a great depth of knowledge. "He probably knows this racetrack better than anyone out here having grown up just down the road. A lot of his buddies are around this weekend, so he's got extra motivation to shine." When Sunday's eliminations begin, Gray will be paired off with No. 12 qualifier John Gaydosh, who has a best pass of 6.686 at 206.13 mph. "Well first off we know what that car is capable of because John is an engine customer of ours," Gray said. "And we also know from experience that he's good behind the wheel, so that's a test right off the bat. "We've been gaining some good ground in the points and I'd like to see us continue that tomorrow. We will have our car prepared and ready for the fight." The first two rounds of eliminations will air live on FOX Sports 1 beginning at noon, Sunday, with a three-hour recap later in the evening, starting at midnight.
