Travelers should plan for road construction this summer

SKOKIE, Ill., May 25, 2016 -- U.S. travelers may need to plan extra time for their road trips this summer as major construction projects are slated for some of the country's most popular vacation destinations and throughways, according to Rand McNally's research department.

One of the most significant projects will be the continued rebuilding of 21 miles of Interstate 4 in central Florida. Disney World, Sea World Orlando, and Universal Orlando are all located directly off of the 132-mile highway, according to Rand McNally.

Construction projects are tracked on an ongoing basis by Rand McNally's research department, which incorporates the data into its proprietary RoadWork updates for its consumer electronics products with on-board mapping and navigation. For drivers navigating with a Rand McNally device or tablet, these construction projects are included in the monthly, free RoadWorkupdate.

In addition to the Orlando area, several other major metro areas will all also be undergoing significant construction this summer.

  • Philadelphia – Construction will be continuing on the rebuilding of the I-295, I-76, and Route 42 interchange in Camden County.
  • Dallas – Scheduled to run in two phases, the 35Express project will rebuild the 30-mile corridor from Dallas to Denton, TX.
  • Chicago – Construction will begin this summer on the eastern segment of the I-90 widening project, running from Chicago to Elgin.
  • Los Angeles – The I-5 South Capacity Enhancements project will widen and create an HOV lane in each direction between I-605 and Orange County Line.
