NASCAR SALUTE TO THE ARMED FORCES... IRWINDALE!
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ IRWINDALE EVENT CENTER LATE NEWS: ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ May 28 at Irwindale Speedway: NASCAR Memorial Day Salute ARMED FORCES NIGHT 2016 ...The night of Saturday, May 28 at Irwindale Speedway will feature a special Memorial Day Weekend tribute to the Armed Forces of the United States along with a full slate of NASCAR racing beginning with the track's national championship division, the Pick Your Part Late Models. Only 16 points separate the first two names on the Late Model points list: #50 Trevor Huddleston (Agoura Hills) leads with 392 and #71 Christian McGhee (Claremont) is back the aforementioned 16 markers with 376. McGhee has finished second or third to Huddleston in the last five Late Model races and (most likely) is getting a bit tired of shadowing Huddleston to the line. #77 Nick Joanides (Woodland Hills) has won a couple of races himself and trails the two youngsters by only 48 points at eight races into the season. The night of the 28th will see the Pick Your Part Late Models again running twin races (one early, one later in the program) with fully 100 points on the table for a double win (like Huddleston's April 18 and May 14 single night double victories). Remarkably enough, all three of Irwindale's Late Model division's crop of 2016 rookie drivers find themselves in the top ten in points: #23 Ryan Vargas (La Mirada) is in 5th place with 318, with #58 Dylan Garner (Yorba Linda) close behind in 6th place with 312, followed by #88 Alec Martinez (Tustin) in 8th place with 256 points. #78 Lucas McNeil from Saugus, with 196 points is having a great year in the Seidner's Collision Centers Irwindale Race Trucks. Winning three of the four events run so far and finishing second in the forth he has a "semi-comfortable" points lead of 22 over his next nearest rival #7 Andrew Porter of La Verne. Porter has a lead on #9 Connor Cantrell from Valencia, but in his case it's the slimmest possible (2 points) 174 to 172! And, just to add a bit of fun to the hard-hauling, close racing IRT's: that 172 of Cantrell is actually a tie for third place with #34 Dennis Arena from nearby Duarte! Every point counts at a track like Irwindale, and these drivers know it very, very well! Close? With 192 points earned in the first four Inex Legend Cars race of the year, Lakeside's #33 Darren Amidon has built a "whopping" (!) 6-point lead over #5 Parker Steele who commutes to race at Irwindale from Peoria, Arizona (192 - 186). And #76 Jordan Hyland (North Hills) is only 2 points behind Steel with 184. The track's tried and true 50 points to win, 48 for second, 46 for third ... and so on, really keeps the points battles close and "interesting" all season long. ... And the points parade for every division is always up-to-date and available on the Irwindale website for everyone to get a look at how the season is going for every driver out there! The Robertson Solar South West Tour Trucks will make a tour stop at Irwindale for Armed Forces Night with #14 Roger Harder in the points lead after the first three races of 2016 with 154. Second and third place in this "spec" truck class (each truck is technically-identical and the specifications are very closely monitored) are separated by only 5 points ... #21 Dan Coburn having 138 and #77 George Perret right on his back bumper at 133. These touring pros always put on a good show featuring colorful machines and close racing. As befitting the Memorial Day celebration all active and retired military are invited to attend the races FREE (military ID required) on Saturday night. In addition, Hot Dogs and Sodas will be festively priced at only one buck each and tap Beer will happily be poured (with proper age ID of course) at only 2 bucks a cup. As usual, gates open at 4PM and Irwindale's own family-friendly On-Track Autograph Session starts promptly at 5:45PM right down on the racing surface ... kids, moms, dads, veterans, drivers, car clubs, crews ... everyone!
