TOPEKA, Kan. (May 21) -- Shane Gray has a spring in his step again as his Valvoline/Nova
Services Camaro has proven to be a threat at the NHRA Kansas Nationals this weekend
at Heartland Park Topeka.
Gray qualified No. 4 in Topeka, his second race in a row in that spot. He made three
solid passes in qualifying, including a top lap of 6.607 seconds at 209.36 mph.
"We've got a good car going into race day tomorrow, so we've got a good chance,"
 Gray said. "We'll see if we can go a few rounds and get ourselves closer to the
 top 10 in points tomorrow. I feel real good about race day."
Gray has been among the quickest in Pro Stock all weekend. He was fourth-best in
 the second qualifying session, second in Q2, and third in the final session as 
he and his Gray Motorsports team try to break the KB Racing stranglehold on Pro 
Stock this season.
The addition of Pro Stock veteran Dave Connolly has helped Gray pick up the pace.
Connolly joined the team for the race in Atlanta last weekend, and Gray promptly
 qualified No. 4.
"I'm real pleased with where the direction of the car is going," Gray said. "It 
was a good decision by my dad and I to bring Dave on. He's been awesome. We had 
the privilege of racing with him all of 2014, and it was a very memorable year and
a lot of fun.
"Dave's become very close to us since then, and he's a great fit for the team. He
and (co-crew chief) Jim (Yates) are working well together."
Gray starts eliminations on Sunday against No. 13 qualifier Jeg Coughlin Jr., whose
best lap this weekend was 6.670 seconds at 206.61 mph.
"Everything is coming along," Gray said. "This Valvoline/Nova Services Chevrolet
 Camaro is getting a helluva lot closer to the KB cars, a lot closer than they probably
want us to be."
Eliminations start at noon, Sunday. FOX Sports 1 will air qualifying from 11 p.m.
to 1 a.m. ET, Saturday. Elimination action will be broadcast live from 2 to 5 p.m.
ET, Sunday.
