World's Largest Car Rental Company Earns Accolades for Training and Development

ST. LOUIS, Feb. 3, 2016 -- Nearly 15,000 Enterprise Rent-A-Car, National Car Rental and Alamo Rent A Car employees were promoted or took on new opportunities in 2015.

This represents a 10 percent annual increase in companywide promotions at Enterprise Holdings Inc., the world's largest car rental company as measured by revenue, fleet and employees. The company operates – through an international network of regional subsidiaries and independent franchises – more than 9,000 fully staffed neighborhood and airport car rental locations in more than 75 countries.

Enterprise Holdings' culture is built on a set of founding values that not only fosters professional development, but also a strong promote-from-within philosophy. In fact, a major driver of the company's promote-from-within culture is the renowned Enterprise Rent-A-Car Management Training program. It has been consistently successful in developing new hires into the next generation of business leaders and is one of the key reasons Enterprise Holdings was recognized for training and development excellence by three organizations in 2015:

  • Chief Learning Officer magazine recognized Enterprise Holdings as a bronze LearningElite organization, which recognizes exemplary workforce development strategies that deliver outstanding business results;
  • Training magazine ranked Enterprise Holdings on its Training Top 125, which lists some of the most successful learning and development programs in the world; and
  • Workforce magazine included Enterprise Holdings on its Workforce 100 list, which recognizes comprehensive human resource performance.

"Our dedication to training and coaching is a fundamental part of Enterprise Holdings' culture, and it remains instrumental to our long-term success," said Steve McCarty, vice president of talent development at Enterprise Holdings Inc. "These awards validate the strength of our training and mentorship programs as well as our steady investment in growing and developing our people, which represents a core area of our business – not just for human resources but for employees and managers across all disciplines."

Management Trainees receive a hands-on experience that teaches them how to run a business, empower teams and provide excellent face-to-face customer service. Other hallmarks of the program include extensive training in a wide range of business skills, including profit and loss management, business-to-business marketing and sales, and logistics. Enterprise employees have a chance to advance their careers quickly, thanks in large part to the thorough preparation they receive through the Management Training program.

With a breadth of job opportunities and business functions to support the company's operations, Enterprise Holdings offers employees the opportunity to switch careers without switching companies. In support of this concept, last year Enterprise Holdings' Talent Development department significantly upgraded the company's internal careers website to provide information about career mobility.

The company takes employee development very seriously, basing promotions in large part on managers' ability to retain and develop their employees. Enterprise Holdings employs a philosophy of learning that focuses on job shadowing and active learning. Managers play a crucial role in the process, providing on-the-job support that is critical to the company's success in building a strong bench of leaders. This approach is supported by the company's proprietary Show, Observe, Shape (SOS) Training, which helps managers effectively coach their employees by showing them how to perform a particular job, observing them as they complete the task and shaping their behavior through timely feedback.
