Lesson from the 14-Cars Crash and Pile-up on the Bronx River Parkway in New York City

driving in winter

NEW YORK -- January 29, 2016: NBC New York is reporting on a 14-car pile-up on the Bronx River Parkway as New York experienced some of its first snowfall of the season. ("Bronx River Parkway Partially Reopens After Icy 14-Car Pileup," January 18, 2016). Officials are blaming icy conditions as a main cause in the massive Yonkers accident.

According to reports, there were as many as four smaller collisions that clustered together into one larger amalgamation. On the busy thruway, one driver reported that he saw cars colliding in front of him, but that due to the icy roads he was unable to stop in time to avoid crashing into the scene. Overall, 10 people were reported to have suffered minor injuries, despite the magnitude of the accident and officials finding one SUV dangling over the edge of a bridge. The road is not expected to fully reopen until Tuesday.

"Thankfully this time, nobody was seriously injured," said Adnan Munawar, Partner at Munawar & Andrews-Santillo LLP, "As winter sets upon us, drivers need to be cognizant of the conditions that ice and snow create. While it very may well be that there is no-one in particular to blame this time, all too often drivers continue at high speeds regardless of the conditions before them. Some accidents are inevitable, but we plead with drivers to do everything they can to avoid situations like these."

"While officials sort out this mess, we encourage drivers not only to reflect on considering driving more defensively, but also on whether or not they are prepared in case they are ever in an accident. Anyone who is in a motor vehicle collision, as long as they are stable and safe, should gather as much information as possible, including taking pictures. Then, they should contact a lawyer immediately and seek guidance as to what to do next. Following a plan from the very beginning is the best way to ensure that a driver's rights are protected and maximizes the chances of holding the party who cause the crash responsible. Access to a personal injury attorney is easier than most may think, as there is no charge for a consultation, and there is only ever a fee when you win."
