LAS VEGAS - November 3, 2015: On Wednesday, Nov. 4, 2015, the Lee Business School at the University of Nevada, Las Vegas (UNLV) is featuring the world's largest car rental company as part of its Sustainability Speaker Series and ongoing efforts to promote responsible business education.

Tomorrow's presentation – "Implementing Corporate Sustainability Fleetwide" – will be delivered by Lee Broughton, Vice President of Global Brand Marketing at Enterprise Holdings Inc., which owns the Enterprise Rent-A-Car, National Car Rental and Alamo Rent A Car brands. Through its regional subsidiaries, Enterprise Holdings Inc. operates the largest fleet of vehicles in the world – more than 1.7 million – and a global network of more than 9,000 fully staffed neighborhood and airport locations in more than 70 countries.

Four years ago, Broughton delivered another keynote presentation in Las Vegas – at the 2011 Car Rental Show, an annual conference sponsored by Auto Rental News magazine and the American Car Rental Association. Broughton, who began his car rental career in 2003, was head of corporate sustainability at the time and urged the U.S. car rental industry to raise its level of awareness, action and communication. He stressed that "…sustainability is a disciplined business practice that's as good for our respective companies as it is for society at large. It adds to the consumer's criteria for choosing our brand – and that means renting more cars."

In his current position, Broughton now oversees the flagship Enterprise Rent-A-Car brand in North America, as well as the Enterprise, National and Alamo brands in South America, Central America and the Caribbean. As part of his global marketing responsibilities, Broughton is helping to integrate the Enterprise brand with the company's award-winning corporate sustainability program, focusing on global economic, social and environmental sustainability and how those interdependencies impact the car rental industry overall.

Integrating Sustainability, Urban Mobility and Brand Marketing

A key component of this evolving marketing initiative is a pragmatic, yet strategic focus on urban mobility and local transportation infrastructure – a direct result of Enterprise delivering transportation alternatives right where people live and work since 1957. Forty years later, Enterprise Rent-A-Car trademarked the term Virtual CarŽ, after recognizing the strength and energy of local service, regardless if it is for an hour, a day, a week or longer.

Today, this intuitive neighborhood business model features a wide variety of programs, including Enterprise Fleet Management, Enterprise CarShare, Enterprise Rideshare, Enterprise Car Sales, Enterprise Truck Rental, Zimride by Enterprise, Exotic Car Collection by Enterprise and Motorcycle Rental by Enterprise.

Such convenience is made possible by Enterprise Holdings' unique grassroots network, which includes more than 6,200 U.S. neighborhood and airport offices – all located within 15 miles of 90 percent of the U.S. population – and more than 1 million vehicles in operation from coast to coast. This also enables Enterprise to provide affordable and accessible transportation options to consumers who rely on mass transit during the week in large urban markets, and to those who simply cannot afford to purchase or maintain a vehicle of their own.

Sustainability and Success in Nevada

In Nevada – where 33 Enterprise, National and Alamo car rental locations currently operate – Enterprise Holdings not only takes a long-term approach to providing a total transportation solution, but also to balancing the interests of its customers, employees and the communities it serves. For example, since August 2014, the overall economic impact of Enterprise Holding's regional subsidiary has totaled almost $49 million:

  • $31 million in state and local tax revenues;
  • $14 million spent with local collision repair centers, dealerships and vehicle maintenance facilities;
  • $4 million in companywide purchases from diverse suppliers based in Nevada;
  • More than 470 employees hired from Nevada communities;
  • 11 percent fleet growth at both home city and airport locations in southern Nevada;
  • $420,000 raised by employees and matching Enterprise Holdings Foundation donations for the United Way's Nevada chapters; and
  • $131,000 in donations by the Enterprise Holdings Foundation to local charities, such as Urban League, Leukemia & Lymphoma Society, St. Baldrick's Foundation, Boys & Girls Club of Southern Nevada, and the Shriner's Hospital for Children.

In addition to this investment in the community, Enterprise offers customers opportunities to rent vehicles that use clean technologies, such as the more than 45 hybrid vehicles in the Nevada fleet.

Last year, the Global Business Travel Association (GBTA) Foundation awarded Enterprise Holdings the Project ICARUS Gold Medal for making sustainability a core function and providing best-in-class sustainability programs for its company, travelers and customers. In 2015, the GBTA again honored Enterprise Holdings with its Sustainability Outstanding Achievement Award.

"It's not just about what we sell," explained Howard Puterman, Vice President and General Manager for Enterprise Holdings in Nevada, "it's about what we offer – accessibility, flexibility and affordability. Enterprise values interactions over transaction, regardless of whether it's a car, a truck or even a motorcycle, and that's the most effective way to ensure the long-term sustainability of our brands and businesses."
