Vauxhall Launches New Ad Campaign

May 30, 2014: Today, Vauxhall Motors launch ‘Stand Together’, a new Home Nations football TV advert. ‘Stand Together’ features current members of the England Football Squad, football fans and Vauxhall staff from the Vauxhall Ellesmere Port production facility in Merseyside, the UK home of the Vauxhall Astra.

Current members of the England Football squad Steven Gerrard, Wayne Rooney, Glen Johnson, Joe Hart, James Milner and Phil Jones all feature within the 60 second and 40 second ad. Supporters and players stand proudly together across the country and in the stadium, bringing the nation together.

This new TV ad will air just before the 8pm kick off of the England vs Peru match on ITV on Friday 30th May 2014. The soundtrack is adapted from Sir Edward Elgar’s Nimrod, a patriotic, rousing track initially sung by Elgar’s team Wolverhampton Wanderers on the terraces, later becoming synonymous with football chants, ‘Britishness’ and even punk rock.

The scene opens with England players preparing in the dressing room ahead of the game with a voiceover stating, “For every doubter, there is a believer”. Steven Gerrard focuses, zoning into the task ahead, Glen Johnson listens to music as he mentally fixates on the game and the camera pans into Wayne Rooney as he proudly wears the Three Lions on his shirt. In the meantime, fans, children and even a dog line-up shoulder-to-shoulder across the length and breadth of the country. As fans climb the hill to the Angel of the North, staff at the Vauxhall Ellesmere Port plant line-up on the production line ahead of the match. The scene concludes with Hart, Milner, Gerrard, Rooney, Johnson and Jones standing together on the pitch and the voiceover ending, “Together we stand, for we are England and we are proud”.

Commenting on the motivation behind the new Vauxhall Motors ad, Peter Hope, Marketing Director stated: “Stand Together brings players and fans together at such a monumental time within the football calendar. We are proud to support the England Team and wish them and Roy Hodgson luck as they embark on their matches ahead.

“During a major tournament we all become football fans and as the England Team sponsor, we wanted to capture the emotion just before a major England fixture."

McCann Birmingham developed the campaign for Vauxhall Motors under the creative direction of Barrie Robinson and Tim Jarvis. Cosmo Wallace directed ‘Stand Together’, and explained the foundations of the ad; “Stand Together captures the excitement and anticipation a nation feels heading into a major international football tournament. It aims to capture and celebrate football and how it unites nations with people sharing a common interest up and down the country.”
