WASHINGTON--Jan. 7, 2014: The Electric Drive Transportation Association (EDTA) today released the 2013 year-end sales data for the electric drive industry, including numbers for hybrid, plug-in hybrid, extended range and battery electric vehicle sales.

Hybrid sales ended the year at 495,530, a 14 percent increase over the 2012 total number.

Meanwhile, 9,790 plug-in vehicles (plug-in hybrid, extended range and battery electric vehicles) were sold last month, bringing the 2013 cumulative number to 96,702. This reflects an 83 percent jump over the 2012 total of 52,835. Since market rollout at the end of 2010, there have been 167,617 plug-in vehicles sold across the nation.

EDTA President Brian Wynne commented on the numbers, saying that "The electric drive industry is strong and growing with sales trends reflecting the shift from market rollout to market expansion." Wynne continued, "The cost of driving on electricity is the equivalent of one dollar per gallon, these cars are incredibly fun to drive and consumer awareness is growing. Drivers are now choosing how to power their vehicles."

More details can be found in EDTA's electric drive sales dashboard at Electric Drive.
