GM Sells October Record 282,446 Vehicles in China

SHANGHAI--Nov 8, 2013: General Motors and its joint ventures sold 282,446 vehicles in China last month, setting a new October record. Sales were up 12.2 percent on an annual basis, as domestic sales by GM’s Shanghai GM and SAIC-GM-Wuling manufacturing joint ventures as well as its major brands reached new highs for the month.

Shanghai GM sold 132,954 vehicles in China during October, a year-on-year increase of 13.0 percent. SAIC-GM-Wuling’s domestic sales rose 10.7 percent to 143,693 units. FAW-GM sold 5,407 vehicles in the domestic market, a jump of 27.0 percent.

Buick sold 69,746 vehicles in China during October, an increase of 15.3 percent on an annual basis. The brand was led by the original Excelle family, which sold 23,463 vehicles, and the Excelle XT and GT, which had sales of 16,987 units. Demand for both was up slightly from the previous October.

Chevrolet sales in China totaled 59,006 units last month, an increase of 8.0 percent year on year. Its best-selling model was the Cruze, with demand rising 27.0 percent to 26,273 units. Sales of the Sail family (16,843 units) and Malibu (8,814 units) remained strong as well.

Cadillac sales in China increased 68.7 percent on an annual basis in October to 4,202 units. The XTS, its best-selling model, had all-time monthly sales of 2,292 units.

Wuling sales in China during October were 135,687 units, a year-on-year increase of 14.2 percent. It was led by the Hong Guang family, which had sales of 55,150 units – an increase of 61.2 percent from last October. Baojun sales were down 27.0 percent from last October to 8,006 units.

During the first 10 months of 2013 as a whole, sales by GM and its joint ventures in China increased 11.2 percent on an annual basis to a record 2,594,864 units. Domestic sales by Shanghai GM were up 14.7 percent year on year to 1,244,083 units, sales by SAIC-GM-Wuling were up 8.4 percent to 1,300,471 units and sales by FAW-GM were up 2.1 percent to 46,470 units. In addition, Buick sales rose 17.3 percent year on year to 676,076 units, Chevrolet sales were up 4.2 percent to 531,567 units, Cadillac sales increased 53.0 percent to 36,440 units, Wuling sales were up 10.3 percent to 1,223,278 units and Baojun sales grew 18.5 percent to 77,193 units.
