MULGRAVE, AUSTRALIA – July 1,2013: Evo Australia magazine has accomplished a truly remarkable lap of Australia. Described as a rite-of-passage drive, this 18,734km ‘Lap of the Map’ was completed in just 17 days across one of the harshest and most variable climates on earth in a Mercedes-Benz SLS AMG Roadster.

Commenting on the journey, Jesse Taylor, editor, evo Australia magazine said: “On paper, our trip was listed at 17,934km but with additional driving for photography, some side trips and a couple of other changes to the itinerary, we added a further 800km. The shortest day was Alice Springs to Yulara via Uluru and Kata Tjuta at just 634km. Our average daily kays was 1102km.”

Undertaken for the launch of the new evo Australia magazine, Jesse Taylor was buoyed throughout the journey by photographer Thomas Wielecki and the Mercedes-Benz support team led by Nicholas White.

At the heart of the trip was the Mercedes-Benz SLS AMG Roadster. Combining scintillating performance with meticulous attention to detail, the SLS AMG Roadster offers drivers exceptional performance and outstanding driving dynamics.

“We’re pretty confident that the Mercedes-Benz SLS Roadster – 317km/h, $518,000 on road and 420kW – is the fastest, most expensive and most powerful car to ever set out on such an epic drive in this country and, perhaps, the world” Taylor commented.

“When tightening emissions legislation finally draws the curtain on the naturally aspirated engine, AMG’s M159 6.2-Litre V8 will be retired to the hall of fame as one of the greatest engines ever bolted together.”

Commemorating the vast number of famous Australian cities and landmarks visited throughout the drive, bumper stickers were fitted at each location, symbolising not only the scale of the journey but also the unwavering performance of the SLS AMG Roadster.

Horst Von Sanden, Managing Director, Mercedes-Benz Cars Australia/Pacific commented that: “The vehicle performed flawlessly, and apart from a tyre replacement no other maintenance was required. This very special launch edition of evo Australia magazine celebrates the SLS AMG Roadster, demonstrating it is just as capable on the open road as it is on the road less travelled.”
