Red Herring selects 100 top entrepreneurs and promising companies among the 3000 tech startups financed each year in the US and Canada. The winning companies were selected based on a wide variety of criteria including technological innovation, management strength, customer acquisition and financial health. During the several months leading up to the announcement, around 1,400 companies in the fields of security, Web 2.0, software, hardware, life sciences, cloud, mobile and others completed their submissions to qualify for the award.
