First Annual A World In Motion International Motorized Toy Car Competition Winners Announced

WARRENDALE, PA--April 25, 2012: SAE International hosted the first-ever A World In Motion® (AWIM) International Motorized Toy Car Competition on Tuesday, April 24, in Detroit, MI. The challenge focused on explaining scientific concepts to K-12 students in an easily approachable, hands-on environment.

Sponsored by Honeywell, the Motorized Toy Car Competition featured more than 150 middle school students working in engineering design teams to construct a motorized toy using only materials supplied on the day of the event. The competition was judged in three categories: hill climb, speed and obstacle-course.

With the assistance of teachers and industry professional volunteers, the Motorized Toy Car Competition showed students the practical applications of science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) in real world situations. Student competitions were awarded prizes as follows: gold, silver, bronze event awards as well as an overall grand champion award. The grand champion is recognized as the overall highest scoring team in all four of the judged competitions.

2012 Grand Champion -- Team #13 (St. Edith--Livonia, MI)

15 Degree Hill Climb Competition

  • 1st -- Team (St. Johns--Fenton, MI)
  • 2nd -- Team #6 (St. Johns)
  • 3rd -- Team #5 (St. Johns)

30 Degree Hill Climb Competition

  • 1st -- Team #12 (St. Edith)
  • 2nd -- Team #17 (St. Edith)
  • 3rd -- Team #14 (St. Edith)

Speed Competition

  • 1st -- Team #26 (Cesar Chavez--Detroit, MI)
  • 2nd -- Team #19 (College Elsa Triolet -- France)
  • 3rd -- Team #29 (Cesar Chavez)

Obstacle Course Competition

  • 1st -- Team #13 (St, Edith)
  • 2nd -- Team #12 (St. Johns)
  • 3rd -- Team #27 (Cesar Chavez)
