WARRENDALE, PA--Feb. 17, 2012: SAE International has appointed Dr. Zoran Filipi as editor-in-chief for its new Journal of Alternative Powertrains. He begins the three-year volunteer position this month.

Dr. Filipi is the Timken Endowed Chair in Vehicle Design and Development at Clemson University. Prior to that, he served as a research professor of mechanical engineering at the University of Michigan. His research interests are in advanced IC engine combustion concepts, alternative powertrains, and the impact of transportation on energy supply and climate change. His work on internal combustion engines includes the Homogeneous Charge Compression Ignition (HCCI) engine, analysis of diesel engine transients, methodologies for optimizing high degree-of-freedom powertrains, and alternative fuels.

"We could not have found a more qualified individual to lead us in the right direction for the launch of our new journal," said Journal Committee Chair Dr. Mohamed El Sayed.

The SAE International Journal of Alternative Powertrains provides a forum for the scholarly publication of original research and review papers that address challenges and present opportunities in alternative and electric powertrains and propulsion technology. The Journal encourages discussion among researchers, engineers, academic faculty and students, and industry practitioners working with systems as well as components, and the technological aspects and functions of powertrains and propulsion systems alternative to traditional internal combustion and diesel engines. The editorial scope of the Journal will include all technical aspects of alternative propulsion technologies including but not limited to electric drives and electromobility systems, hybrid technology, battery and super-capacitor technology, hydraulic drives, energy storage systems for automotive applications, fuel cell technology, and charging and Smart Grid infrastructures.

SAE International is a global association of more than 134,000 engineers and related technical experts in the aerospace, automotive and commercial-vehicle industries. SAE International's core competencies are life-long learning and voluntary consensus standards development.
