IHS Global Insight North American automotive industry expert speaks to The Offshore Group regarding this year's outlook for the Mexican auto industry

TUCSON, AZ--Jan. 26, 2012: George Magliano, Senior Principal Economist, at IHS Global Insight recently sat down with The Offshore Group to discuss prospects related to automotive manufacturing in Mexico for 2012.

Magliano's role at IHS is to assess the impact of the U.S. and global economies on the North American automotive industry, including sales, production forecasts, trends and analyses.

Automotive manufacturing in Mexico was on the rise in 2011. It was a year of record production in terms of total vehicle consumption and export in the light and passenger vehicle market segments. According to Magliano, "Mexico is becoming a magnet for supplier investment. This is due to announcements of sizable investment in the country in new production platforms over the last year by large automotive industry OEM's such as Nissan, Mazda, BMW, Volkswagen and General Motors."

In addition to sales made within the domestic market, and those derived from exporting product to the United States, the automotive manufacturing in Mexico strategy is increasingly being geared to position the country as a powerhouse export platform from which to ship product to major South American markets. Brazil is the main target of this effort.
