RICHMOND, VA--December 12, 2011: Quality continues to be the most influential factor for car buyers the second year running, with more than double the amount of respondents choosing it over price, according to a recent telephone survey conducted for CarMax, Inc. , the nation's largest retailer of used cars. In fact, as quality increased from year to year, both price and safety fell in percentage points as considerations for car buyers.

“It's why our vehicles go through a rigorous inspection and are thoroughly reconditioned. Our customers can buy a used car for less money than a new vehicle without compromising on quality.”

Forty-five percent of Americans who have purchased a vehicle say that quality has the greatest impact on their car buying decision, followed by price and safety, in that order. Men and women chose quality as their top factor individually too -- 53 percent of men and 37 percent of women chose quality. Resale and environmental factors were least important, at seven and six percent respectively.

"Choosing a vehicle that balances high quality with a fair price provides the value that consumers are looking for," said Tracy Hanson, Nashville region vice president of service operations. "It's why our vehicles go through a rigorous inspection and are thoroughly reconditioned. Our customers can buy a used car for less money than a new vehicle without compromising on quality."

The following are the results of the recent poll that asked adults: "Which of the following factors most influences your car-buying decision?"
