Tokyo Japan November 4, 2011; The Great East Japan Earthquake which struck Japan on March 11 this year has caused tremendous damage. By cutting off supply chains, it has brought about a major drop in Japanese automobile manufacturing, and its effects have even been felt in the manufacture of Japanese automobiles overseas. However, the Japanese automobile industry has dedicated itself to recovery and restoration efforts, and succeeded in restoring production to normal levels in a short period of time.

The Japan Automobile Manufacturers Association, Inc. (Chairman: Toshiyuki Shiga) will, as planned, hold the 42nd Tokyo Motor Show 2011 from Friday, December 2 to Sunday, December 11, 2011 (General Public Days begins Saturday, December 3). The show will be held at Tokyo Big Sight in Ariake, Koto-ku, marking the return of the show to Tokyo for the first time in 24 years. We are confident that this show will showcase, both to those within Japan and overseas, the resilience of Japanese manufacturing.

There are two Press Days on Wednesday, November 30 and Thursday, December 1. On the Special Guest Day on Friday, December 2, the Opening Ceremony and Show Tour by His Imperial Highness Prince Tomohito of Mikasa will be held.

176 exhibitors (number of brands, 35,151 m2 of exhibition space) from 12 countries and 1 region will be participating. This represents a large increase over the previous show, held in 2009, in which 129 exhibitors (number of brands, 21,823 m2 of exhibition space) from 10 countries and 1 region participated. The number of exhibitors (number of brands) has increased by 36%, and the exhibition space by 61%.

All 14 Japanese automobile manufacturers and 15 brands will be exhibiting, as well as 20 foreign manufacturers and 24 foreign brands (passenger cars, commercial vehicles, motorcycles, and Carrozzerias), a significant increase over the 9 foreign manufacturers and 9 foreign brands of the previous show.

Asia is seeing rapid automobile market growth in countries such as China and India, and there has been a sharp uptake in interest in motor shows in cities such as Beijing, Shanghai, and New Delhi. In such circumstances, the Tokyo Motor Show, as a symbol of the technological powerhouse of Japan, will strive to serve as a source of information regarding the cutting edge technologies that tie together automobiles, cities, and people, aiming to become the world's foremost technology motor show.

This year's Tokyo Motor Show will be the site of the new organizer themed project, "SMART MOBILITY CITY 2011". This project is to showcase "next-generation automobiles and the social systems with which they interact" to highlight the roles and responsibilities of the automotive industry amidst growing concern over the global environment and energy issues.

The theme of this year's show is "Mobility can change the world." Automobiles are more than just transportation; they now offer solutions to issues such as our environment, safety, and energy. The new theme delivers a bright message for the future of the automobile industry.
