LONDON--The market for electric vehicles for use by the military, police and other security services is growing significantly. Each segment, be it land, air or sea, is expected to achieve a value of over $1 billion by 2021, according to a new report available on companiesandmarkets.com. EVs for use in security and military applications require specialist manufacturing and assembly, and are therefore more expensive than 'traditional' electric vehicles.

Military Vehicles

Use of EVs with either electric or hybrid drive trains is increasing within the world's military, security and police forces; although the US dominates all aspects of this specific EV market: sales, R&D and manufacturing. There have also been a number of significant developments in EV military technology and similar applications attributed to countries including Canada, Germany, Korea, New Zealand, Singapore and the UK.

There are a number of important enabling technologies which will allow for full development of EVs for military, police and security applications, all of which are analysed in the report: range extenders (custom ICE, mini turbine, fuel cell); advanced lithium-ion batteries; other advanced energy storage; next generation electrical and electronic components; printed electronics and electrics, and structural advances and smart skin.

Military EVs analysed within the report include those deployed in land, air and sea environments, although it is land-based electric vehicles which will hold the largest market share. By the end of the reporting period, even the smaller market segments of electric aircraft and electric water (AUVs)vehicles will be worth in excess of $1 billion each.

The April 2011 electric vehicle research report contains 233 pages of insight into the market for the period 2011-2021. Within the report are profiles of a number of key market players, including: Balqon Corporation, Columbia ParCar, General Motors, GEM, Polaris Industries, T3 Motion, ZAP, BAE Systems, General Dynamics Land Systems, Quantum Technologies, ST Kinetics, DRDO, JAMSTEC, Teledyne Gavia, Lockheed Martin, Boeing and QinetiQ, amongst others.
