WASHINGTON-- Aug. 18, 2011: Today the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) released its list of seven safety measures -- including red light safety cameras -- that can cut traffic deaths significantly, but have not been widely implemented by every state.

"It's no surprise the IIHS has found that red light safety cameras are a proven safety tool to prevent unnecessary traffic fatalities. Red-light running causes thousands of injuries and hundreds of fatalities every year, with a large number being innocent cyclists and pedestrians. Today's report further highlights the need to do everything we can to make our intersections safer. Using red light safety cameras at dangerous intersections can put an end to red-light running and prevent accidents."

David Kelly is the president and executive director of the National Coalition for Safer Roads (NCSR) and former acting administrator of the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA).
