2011 Teen Driving Safety Leadership Award Is Open For Nominations

ITASCA, IL--June 28, 2011: The National Safety Council is accepting nominations for the 2011 Teen Driving Safety Leadership Award, sponsored by General Motors. This award recognizes individuals and organizations that have made great advances in protecting teen drivers. Motor vehicle crashes are the leading cause of teen fatalities, but teens are not the only ones dying. In fact, 15 people are killed each day in motor vehicle crashes involving teen drivers.

Award winners will clearly demonstrate the effectiveness of their programs, which may include efforts such as:

• Advocacy
• Leadership or coordination of an effort to adopt best practices
• Enacting legislation based on proven safety methods
• Enhancing public understanding of teen driving safety issues and prevention methods
• Demonstrating a consistent commitment to teen driving safety leadership

"Driver behavior plays a critical role in safety, particularly for new, inexperienced drivers. We are pleased to support this recognition program and the awareness it gives to developing and maintaining safe driver habits."

Nominations for the 2011 Teen Driving Safety Leadership Award will be accepted through August 5, 2011. To nominate or for more information, visit NSC Teen Award. Three winners will be chosen to receive national recognition.

Previous recipients of the award include American Family Insurance, Harry D. Jacobs High School, National Organizations for Youth Safety, Teens in the Driver Seat, New Jersey Division of Highway Traffic Safety, Johnson & Johnson Global SAFE Fleet Leadership Team in collaboration with The Driving Center, and the Anoka High School (MN) Students Against Destructive Decisions Leadership Team.

The National Safety Council saves lives by preventing injuries and deaths at work, in homes and communities, and on the roads through leadership, research, education and advocacy.
