Goodyear and National Tire Safety Week Perfect Together

AKRON, OH--June 3, 2011: They're all too often neglected, abused and ignored. But this week, The Goodyear Tire & Rubber Company is urging everyone to show a more caring attitude toward their tires.

National Tire Safety Week, held June 5-11, is a time to remind drivers of the simple steps they can take to ensure their tires are safe and in good working condition.

Although the condition of a vehicle's tires has implications on its overall performance and fuel economy, a recent study by the Rubber Manufacturers Association (RMA) reveals 85 percent of drivers do not properly check their tire inflation pressure.

Improper tire pressure can lead to a multitude of problems -- from uneven and accelerated wear, to structural damage. With temperatures rising and many families planning for vacation travel, attention to tire care and maintenance should be heightened, according to Goodyear officials.

"Checking tires for proper inflation and tread condition is one of the most critical -- and easiest -- maintenance procedures for a consumer," said Gary Medalis, general manager, Goodyear brand. "It doesn't take much time or sophisticated equipment. Drivers can easily check their tires themselves, or any of our retail outlets would be happy to assist them."

Goodyear recommends motorists check their tire inflation at least monthly and before long trips. Tires should be inflated to the vehicle manufacturer's recommendations printed on the vehicle door placard or in the owner's manual, not the maximum limit stamped on a tire sidewall.

Caring for tires can also leave more money in a consumer's pocket. According to the U.S. Department of Energy, proper inflation pressure can improve vehicle fuel economy by 3.3 percent, saving up to 12 cents a gallon at the pump.

Consumers can further benefit from increased fuel efficiency by choosing a tire such as Goodyear's Assurance Fuel Max, featuring a fuel-saving tread compound that reduces energy loss as the tire rolls. This helps to save up to 2,600 miles worth of gas over the life of a set of tires.*

Among other initiatives from Goodyear during National Tire Safety Week are these:

  • Goodyear outlets will distribute the RMA's "Be Tire Smart, Play Your PART" consumer booklets, which stress the importance of proper tire care.
  • With their lighted message boards, Goodyear's famous blimps continue to spread the tire care message while in flight, urging consumers on the ground to check tire pressure and treadwear.

Goodyear is one of the world's largest tire companies. It employs approximately 72,000 people and manufactures its products in 55 facilities in 22 countries around the world.

(*2,600 miles based on a 4% fuel economy improvement on a 65,000-Mile Tread Life Limited Warranty, as compared to the standard Goodyear Assurance tire tested on P195/65R15 size -- 2008 Honda Civic. Actual results may vary based on when the tires are replaced, driving and road conditions, and proper tire maintenance.)
