ConnectivityWeek Explores Smart Grid Wireless Infrastructure, Electric Vehicles and Data Centers

Plug

DALLAS--April 12, 2011:What do electric vehicles and data centers have in common? Their shared stake in the cost of electricity and how much they stand to benefit from Smart Grid. ConnectivityWeek's InfraConn track will explore how extending Smart Grid benefits beyond the grid could help manage the energy efficiency of our critical infrastructure -- such as data centers and EV charging.

Data Center Energy Efficiency: Data center electricity costs are increasing rapidly. Google spends $38 million annually to power theirs, according to a research report from MIT, Carnegie Mellon and Akamai. And a 2008 McKinsey & Co. report predicts carbon emissions from data centers will quadruple by 2020, exceeding the airline industry.

"At ConnectivityWeek, we will explore how the very technologies that data centers hinge upon -- IT and communications -- can play a critical role in improving data center efficiency, especially when applied in the context of Smart Grid and demand response," said David Shroyer, President, Shroyer Consulting Group, a company that helps clients grow and develop their data center efficiency.

Electric Vehicles: Pike Research estimates plug-in hybrid electric vehicles and battery electric vehicle sales could reach 3.2 million between 2010 and 2015; and the Chevy Volt and Nissan Leaf are hitting streets today. InfraConn will explore issues related to charging, vehicle-to-grid applications, and the communications standards and modules needed to manage vehicle-to-grid interaction.

Wireless in the Communications Infrastructure: As a key component of the Smart Grid communications infrastructure, wireless network deployment strategies stand to be "make or break" issues for utilities. Two InfraConn tracks -- "Wireless WAN Business and Policy" and "Wireless WAN Technology and Directions" -- will explore these issues in depth.

ConnectivityWeek explores how information and communications technology (ICT) can be applied to manage energy and deliver efficiency on the grid and across all vertical consumption areas. Other event tracks include: HomeConn, BuilConn, IndConn, DR-Expo and GridWise Expo.

Clasma Events, Inc . specializes in strategic conferences at the center of the worldwide energy discussion.  Focusing on Smart Grid, connectivity, and the new energy economy, Clasma's major events include ConnectivityWeek, GridWeek, and Grid-Interop.
