DETROIT--March 14, 2011: Toyota will serve as the platinum level sponsor of the 2011 Science and Engineering Fair of Metropolitan Detroit (SEFMD), an annual competition that honors some of the brightest young minds in the tri-county area.

Celebrating its 54th year, the SEFMD starts this Tuesday, March 15 and runs through Saturday, March 19.  The event will be held at Cobo Center in downtown Detroit.

The SEFMD features a myriad of innovative projects from students in the 6th through 12th grades, representing Wayne, Macomb and Oakland counties.  Judging is scheduled for Wednesday, March 16, with free-of-charge public viewing reserved for Thursday, March 17 and Friday, March 18.

This year, 1,378 students from numerous public, private and home schools will compete in the SEFMD.

"These students are involved because they have a love and acuity for science, technology, engineering and mathematics," said Dave Baxter, Executive Administrator for the Technical Administration and Planning Office at Ann Arbor-based Toyota Technical Center, and an SEFMD board member. "There are bound to be some terrific, future automotive engineers in this competition and we look forward to seeing their innovative projects."
