SYDNEY – March 10, 2011: Volvo Car Australia has introduced its 2011 model range featuring a vast array of changes including more powerful and efficient engines, higher levels of active and passive safety, increased convenience and comfort features, improved driving dynamics and reduced prices.

The changes embrace the C30, C70, S40 and V50, Volvo's large V70 wagon and flagship S80 sedan and its XC70 and XC90 SUV models and present a fresh new Volvo lineup.

These improvements in safety, performance, equipment and passenger comfort advance Volvo’s already strong stance in all these disciplines positioning the company for a strong and healthy 2011.

Engines and powertrains - improved performance and efficiency

Headlining the engine changes is the new 3.0-litre turbocharged six cylinder T6 petrol engine offered in the S60, S80, V70 and XC60.

Already recognised for its excellence having been lauded as one of Ward's 10 Best Engines for 2011, the new T6 engine delivers substantial performance gains with maximum power output increased from 210kW to 224kW, while the peak torque has been stepped up from an already muscular 400 Nm to an impressive 440 Nm.

This is the same torque output as the S80's outgoing V8 engine prompting Volvo to rationalise the line-up with the S80 now powered by the new T6 engine that drives all four wheels through a slick and smooth six-speed Geartronic automatic transmission with Sports Mode.

In addition to the significant improvement in performance, Volvo has also delivered a cleaner and more efficient T6 engine. In the V70, for example, the combined fuel consumption has dropped from 11.8l/100km to 10.2l/100km and CO2 emissions from 281g/km to just 243g/km.

In order to achieve such improvements, the T6 engine underwent a substantial overhaul to reduce friction and improve efficiency through the use of such components as tappets coated with DLC (Diamond Like Carbon) and a new Super Ignition Spark Plug, that uses much smaller electrodes to produce a stronger spark, which in turn improves power and fuel consumption.

Other efficiency gains were made through changes to ancillary components that include a new Electro Hydraulic Power Assisted Steering system, the introduction of regenerative braking, modifications to water pump and alternator / air conditioning drive ancillaries and revised mapping of the transmission software.

Revised software for the high output 2.4-litre five-cylinder turbodiesel D5 engine in the XC90 has also delivered substantial increases in power and torque with the new engine generating a maximum power of 147kW - up from 136kW - and 20Nm more torque that now peaks at 420Nm.

The new diesel engine for the XC90 now meets Euro5 emission standards and joins the upgraded 3.2-litre six cylinder petrol engine that benefits from an extra 5kW of power. Maximum power is 180kW and torque is 320Nm while the top of the range 232kW/440Nm 4.4-litre V8 petrol powerplant remains unchanged.

The latest generation Euro 5 compliant 3.2-litre six cylinder petrol engine is also offered in Volvo's popular XC70 alongside an enhanced D5 2.4-litre diesel. This engine now boasts 151kW of power (up from 136 kW) and an extra 20Nm of torque – now 420Nm.

Recognising the sporting appeal of the C70 hardtop convertible, S40 sedan and V50 wagon, Volvo has chosen to fit all three models with the powerful, refined and economical 2.5-litre turbocharged petrol five-cylinder T5 engine as standard. Generating 169kW and 320Nm, theT5 engine is now also mated to the smooth five-speed Geartronic automatic transmission as standard.

Complementing the powerful turbo engine and maximising the already agile nature of both the S40 and V50, Volvo has also made the dynamic chassis standard on both models to further sharpen the driving experience.

This rationalisation of the range recognises the strong demand for these models and their inherent appeal to new car buyers who value performance, economy, safety and style.

The same T5 engine is also available in the stylish four-seater C30 hatch mated to a six-speed manual gearbox with the Geartronic automatic transmission available as an option.

The C30 is also offered with the ultra-efficient 1.6-litre turbocharged diesel engine in the C30 DRIVe model. The new 2011 version gains more power and torque courtesy of some significant modifications. Peak power has been increased by 4kW to 84kW while torque has been lifted by a substantial 30Nm to 270Nm. Among the modifications is a reduced compression ratio, modified injection system, a new eight-valve head, and redesigned turbocharger, pistons, throttle body and catalytic converter.

The C30 DRIVe is now equipped with a new six-speed manual gearbox as standard and the upgraded engine now meets the latest Euro 5 emission standards. The engine still uses stop/start technology to help reduce fuel consumption around town.

The improved performance and Euro 5 emissions compliance has resulted in a slight increase for fuel consumption and CO2 emissions. The C30 DRIVe uses 3.9L/100km and emits 104g/km CO2.

Safety - increased structural integrity and advanced technology

Volvo's long standing reputation for innovation in automotive safety is well deserved and for the 2011 model range, it introduces yet more features designed to improve safety on the roads.

Chief among these is the standard fitment on all Volvo models of the Emergency Brake Light (EBL) system designed to warn following drivers of heavy braking to avoid a potential collision. When the system detects harsh braking, the rear brake lights flash five times per second. When the vehicle slows to under 10km/h the hazard lights are activated.

These can then be switched off manually or automatically turn off once the vehicle speed exceeds 10km/h again. EBL is active at all speeds where ABS application is detected and over 60km/h where harsh braking occurs.

For improved visibility to other vehicles, pedestrians and road users, all C30, C70 S40 and V50 models are now fitted with dedicated daytime running lights mounted in the front spoiler that automatically come on when the car is started.

Further functionality has also been added to the Adaptive Cruise Control (ACC) that is optionally available on V70, S80, XC70 and XC90 models. ACC allows drivers to automatically maintain a safe distance from the vehicle in front using a radar sensor and digital camera integrated with the cruise control. The third-generation version introduced for 2011 now offers a three-stage system which first warns the driver, then pre-charges the brakes and finally applies full braking force.

If the vehicle in front suddenly brakes and a collision is likely, the system alerts the driver with a flashing red light on the windscreen and an audible signal. If the driver fails to react and a collision is imminent, the system immediately applies full braking force.

While Volvo has always been a leader when it comes to advanced safety technology, there is also a very strong level of inherent occupant protection built into the structure of its cars and for 2011 V70, S80 and XC70 models, that has been further improved. Additional structural reinforcements between the A and B pillars have been added to increase the Side Impact Protection System (SIPS) providing even more security for passengers in a side impact with a tree or pole.

There is also an improved sensitivity range for the side curtain airbag deployment in front and rear quarter collisions.

The rear headrest cushions are now also firmer and have been moved slightly forward to reduce whiplash injuries for rear seat passengers.

Features - high quality and convenience
Volvo has now introduced Bluetooth connectivity as a standard feature across the entire range of models for 2011 enabling safe and convenient hands-free mobile phone use and the potential for audio streaming (available with the new IAM) via compatible devices.

To ensure a crisp and clear audio quality, whether it is for a phone call or to listen to your latest favourite tunes, all Volvo models now feature high quality speakers sourced from audio specialist Harman Kardon.

Model by model - refreshed design, model realignment and value-add option packs
In addition to the mechanical, safety and feature upgrades for the new range of 2011 Volvo models, the Swedish manufacturer has also introduced a number of design changes, model realignments and new option packs designed to offer customers significant added value.

The exterior aesthetics across the range have been refreshed with a variety of new design alloy wheels specific to individual models and exterior paint colours while all models fitted with a sunroof benefit from a new mesh wind deflector that reduces wind noise when the sunroof is opened.

To simplify model choice for customers, Volvo has introduced a two-tier model lineup for all T5-engined C30, S40, V50 and C70 models with launch of the new entry-level T5 S automatic variants.
