Six Month Vehicle 'Rego' Payment Option - It's A Win-Win Situation

VICTORIA, AUSTRALIA – January 12, 2011: VACC, the peak automotive industry body in Victoria, says the introduction of a six month vehicle registration payment option should be immediate.

VACC is campaigning for the introduction of a flexible vehicle registration payment option and has written to the new Minister for Roads and Public Transport, Terry Mulder, to call for immediate action.

Following a cost benefit analysis, VACC has found that a six month payment option would benefit motorists and small business owners.

“VACC is calling for a six month vehicle registration payment option because it is a win-win for all concerned,” VACC Media Manager, Murray Collins, said.

“Householders will benefit because they can spread the burden of their ‘rego’ payment, which at the moment, is paid as an annual lump sum. The Victorian Government wins because they continue to raise revenue and VicRoads, who collect the payments, win because they already have the infrastructure in place through the six month concession card payment system.

“With no expensive infrastructure or technology changes required, we cannot see why the Victorian Government would not want to introduce flexible vehicle payment options immediately,” Mr Collins said.

Victoria is the only state which does not offer an alternative payment option for vehicle registrations. In Queensland and South Australia, motorists have a payment option of three months.

VACC’s research reveals that Government, community and industry will all benefit and all that would need to be done is to amend regulations.
